There's a new web site: BitterWaitress.com where wait staff can report poor tippers. The web site defines a shitty tip as any tip below 17% provided service was "adequate".
I tend to tip based on the quality of the service. However, I consider the tip is for quality of service. The wait staff should be getting paid by the restaurant for a basic level of service, and I tip for good service.
I rarely stiff someone, but sometimes a wait person really annoys me. This is most likely to happen if it takes me forever to get out of the restaurant once I'm done eating, or if I go through the entire meal without a refill on drinks.
If you aren't in a pissy mood, if you refill my coke a couple of times, especially while I'm still eating, and if you handle my bill promptly, you'll get something close to 15%. Sometimes it's a little lower (25 cents, or whatever), and sometimes it's higher.
If my kids were a problem, but you handled it... If I did something weird with my order, but you got it right... If you were exceptionally pleasant... You'll see something closer to 20%. I consider 20% a good tip. You have to truly be phenomenal for me to intentionally tip over 20%.
I can't believe this site considers 17% a shitty tip. Anyone who complains about a tip greater than 10% is a whining bitch.
