Joe Larson: Writing

I do a bit of writing. Okay, I do a lot of writing. I've completed the first drafts of two novels totaling 1,000 pages, plus a few shorts and some non-fiction pieces.

Fiction

The Visit: The Dogs

Written: Jan, 1999. Added to web page: May 2, 1999.

The world is never going to see the first novel I wrote. However, there are some snippets of writing I am very pleased with.

This book original started out as an interruption as I wrote about the dogs. I was working on something completely different, but took a break because they were bugging me too much, exactly as told in this snippet.

Let me know what you think. Go take a look at the pictures nav link if you want to see what I mean. The photos don't do complete justice, especially to Nickolai, but maybe you can compare them to my writing.

Adrift Chapter 1

Written: Jan, 1999. Added to web page: May 2, 1999.

My second novel is titled Adrift. Here is the first chapter.

Velvet Dreams (aka Outlaw Computing)

Written: July-August, 1999.

I've been published! My story, Outlaw Computing has been renamed Velvet Dreams and was published on an online e-zine called The Writers Hood.

The story appeared in a few years ago and has fallen off their back listing section, so the story reappears here .

This story is about online romance. Thanks to Lyrical for initial brainstorming sessions, and many thanks to everyone who encouraged me to finish it. Thanks to Kammy for her heartwarming comments. This is my first publishing credit, and it wouldn't have happened without the support of these people. Thank you!

Impression

The Digital Catapult published Impression a while ago. This is a story based on the same world as "Adrift" referenced above. The story isn't perfect and assumes that you understand the nature of the women from Dawson's Star, assumes you understand they are telepathic. Other than that flaw, I like the story, and I hope you do, too.

Future Fears

This is a very short story (200 words) that I wrote in response to a contest idea in The Digital Catapult. I wasn't trying to win contest, I was just amusing myself.

Forever Friends

Forever Friends describes how I feel about dogs. Beware, you may shed a tear or too.

I started "Forever Friends" much like most stories -- in my head while driving. I was on a 6-hour car ride, and probably spent a couple of hours putting this together. It took me another year and a half before I was done. I'm not totally satisfied, but I think I make my point. This was a difficult story for me to write. I hope you enjoy it.

Playground in the Mind

Playground in the Mind was written as part of a small contest on Julie Czerneda's news group. I don't want to do a lot of setup for the story, however, so won't explain the contest.

My entry won for "most twisted". I don't intend to tell you what that means, either. Feel free to ask after you've read the story.

Enjoy.

Non-Fiction

Good Links

I am a member of Critters, an online SF/F/H critique group. Kristin DeMoen is another Critter.

Skolian Empire author Catherine Asaro is more responsible than she knows for my getting involved in writing again. Julie Czerneda is another favorite new author, and the first person to call me a writer. Thank you, Julie, you were so right. Holly Lisle writes some very amusing books. Tara K. Harper has some interesting info for writers.

Speculations is a great resource for writers.
